The Walnut Heart
By Michael E. Riffel, 2015
(Dedicated to Sue & John Erickson)
It was an old piece of Walnut.
Dark and stained It all looked the same.
Stripped and sanded it revealed much more.
For It was made of many pieces.
The left was bold, coarse, and dark
With solid straight grains.
The right was intricate and delicate
with grains like angel wings.
Firmly adhered between
Was a beautiful contrast
Of light hues and grains,
As though they were created
From a marriage of extremes.
Yes, this old piece of wood has a destiny.
It shall become a symbol of Love and Family.
